EASTER TRIDUUM – The Three Great Days.
For three full days, from Holy Thursday evening to Easter Sunday night, the Church celebrates the Paschal mystery of Jesus Christ. This is his work of saving us by his dying and rising: one great act of God’s love and mercy for us.
HOLY THURSDAY
Evening Mass: We remember the Passover feast of the Jewish people and the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples when we celebrate the Eucharist this evening. Before he offers himself on the cross, Jesus takes bread and says, “This is my body”. He takes a cup of wine and says “This is my blood of the new covenant…shed to save all sinners. Do this in memory of me”.
GOOD FRIDAY
Paschal fast: This morning we begin our two-day fast in preparation for the Easter vigil. We eat less food than normal and cut out entertainments. Good Friday is a universal day of fasting and abstaining from meat
Liturgy: At 3:00 o’clock, the time of our Lord’s death on the cross, we come together in church to remember what Jesus has done for us. In the service of the Word, we listen to the solemn proclamation of Jesus’ passion according to John, then offer prayer for the world and for God’s people, the Church.
We venerate the cross, and eat the life-giving Body of the Lord in communion.
HOLY SATURDAY
On this day, the body of Jesus lay in the guarded tomb and the frightened disciples hid behind locked doors. In the Church, Holy Saturday is a quiet day, the great Sabbath rest.
EASTER
Easter Vigil: This service is the most important celebration of the Church year. It takes place during the dark hours of the night. It has four distinct stages:
1) The Service of Light.
2) Liturgy of the Word.
3) Baptism and Confirmation, baptismal vows.
4) Eucharist.
Easter Day: The joyful celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection continues. Alleluia! Meaning “Praise to God!” is our shout of joy. The Easter Season continues until Pentecost, 50 days after Easter.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS:

BIBLE STUDY: No Bible Study on Monday, April 18. The next Bible Study will be on Monday, April 25 at 7 pm.
This year we read St. Matthew’s Passion on Palm Sunday. One sentence has been misunderstood by Christians for centuries. This has caused anti-Semitic attitudes and feelings against Jewish people; many have died because of Christian anti-Semitism. In his recent book Jesus of Nazareth, Part II, 2011, p. 186-7, Pope Benedict gives us the correct meaning of this sentence in St. Matthew.
“When in Matthew’s account the “whole people” say: “His blood be on us and on our children” (27:25), the Christian will remember that Jesus’ blood speaks a different language from the blood of Abel (Heb 12:24); it does not cry out for vengeance and punishment; it brings reconciliation. It is not poured out against anyone; it is poured out for many, for all. Read in the light of faith, it means that we all stand in need of the purifying power of love which is his blood. These words are not a curse, but rather redemption, salvation. Only when understood in terms of the theology of the Last Supper and the Cross, does this verse from Matthew take on its correct meaning”.

LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP – Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
Every year I appeal to you to take part in the Share Lent campaign. Founded and overseen by the bishops of Canada, the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace works on behalf of the poor, the marginalized and those suffering the effects of war, violence and natural disasters throughout the world, including those in Haiti and in Japan.
Around the world, the voice of those deprived of freedom is being heard by their governments. As events in Egypt and elsewhere have recently shown, people yearn for transparency and honesty in public life and want to participate in the political process through fair elections. Many of the projects of our CCODP partners are directed to helping make democratic institutions possible or more effective.
I invite you to be generous in the Share Lent collection taken on “Solidarity Sunday,” the Fifth Sunday of Lent, April 10th. The proceeds assist development and peace-building projects that aim to make lasting improvements in the lives of our brothers and sisters most in need. The Lord will surely reward your Lenten sacrificial offering.
With the assurance of my prayers for you and your families during this holy season of renewal and conversion of heart, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, J. Michael Miller, CSB
Archbishop of Vancouver

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: Sometimes in the busyness of our daily lives, we can mistakenly think that our gifts are of our own doing, forgetting the true source of all of our gifts. The same Spirit that raised Lazarus from the dead dwells in us. What a gift! It is this same Spirit that decides which gifts to give each of us (1 Cor. 12:11). Good stewards acknowledge God as the one true source of all their gifts. They share their gifts in the renewal of society and the building up of God’s Kingdom.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: Today we remember the Transfiguration. In today‟s Gospel, Peter says to Jesus that, „it is good for us to be here”. Do you ever wonder why there were not more disciples on the mountain that day? Could it be that they were too busy! Stewardship means that we are accountable for the use of all our gifts, including the gift of each day, our time. Once we spend our time we cannot get it back. How do you steward your time? Peter, James and John took the time to be with Jesus and were rewarded. It was good for them to be there!

St. Joseph’s Society Collection – March 13th:
At present the diocese has 17 priests on full retirement, 13 on partial retirement (still working or semi retired) and 1 on sick benefits for total benefits of over $314,000. With 30 receiving benefits, the Society needs all the help it can get. The amount this collection brings in often determines whether the savings go up or down in any given year. With interest rates being low, that important source of income is greatly reduced.

MARCH 6, 2011 – 9th Sunday in Ordinary Time:
Our Lord gives us two distinct commands today. We must listen and we must act. We listen when we participate in Mass. We act when we participate in the ministry of the parish. We need to do both for a strong foundation. Participating more fully in the liturgy and life of the parish may require some changes on our part. We may have to move away from our current lifestyle so that we can move closer to God.
